BRENT CHAMBERS is managing director and creative director of Flux Animation Studio.

Talk for just a few minutes to Brent about animation and you’ll feel the passion and excitement about the animation industry.

Talk to him about the 20 plus people who work for his company and you’ll feel the pride and confidence he has in his staff, many of whom are long-standing Flux employees with their own intense enthusiasm for the work they do.

Brent’s love affair with animation grew out of his early days as a graphic artist and his subsequent training as an animator under Disney veteran John Ewing.

A founding staff member at Freelance Animators, he initially worked on projects for Warner Brothers and Disney. They included ‘Tiny Toons’, ‘Animaniacs’, ‘Darkwing Duck’ and the video releases ‘Goof Troop Ramp Champ’ and ‘It’s Your Best Birthday Ever Charlie Brown’.

In 1995, Brent established FAL, the commercial wing of Freelance, and in the same year won a gold Axis award for the ANZ Serious Saver commercial and was runner-up New Zealand Cartoonist of the Year in the Qantas Media Awards.

The following year, a move to set up Whizzdom animation for kids TV saw Brent working on television commercials and various television series for New Zealand and Australia. In under a year Whizzdom became the largest animation studio in the country.

When Whizzdom moved south to Dunedin in 1997, Brent established Flux Animation Studio.

Based, at first, in a basement in Auckland’s Grey Lynn, Flux worked on character design and pre-production for internationally-acclaimed Yoram Gross and Energee Entertainment. Projects included the Australian series ‘Flipper’, ‘Wicked’ and ‘Fairy Tale Police Department’.

Under Brent’s directorship, the company rapidly grew and soon moved from its humble garage offices to a modern studio in central Auckland where it quickly built a reputation as a leading New Zealand and international commercial animation house.

In 2004, Brent directed 3 spots for Hornet Inc. animation for Orbit Gum, playing on the Wrigley’s famed Times Square Jumbotron billboard in New York.

Overseas, Brent has built a fine network of alliances, which include Australian-based Flying Bark Productions and New York and Los Angeles-based the Famous Group for whom Brent is an animation director.

Quick to see the growing acceptance of animation with advertisers, and with the introduction of technology lowering the cost of animation, Brent continues to be excited about the possibilities for animation both at home in New Zealand and in the overseas market.

Brent has held board memberships for a variety of industry related organizations, including Film Auckland, Creative Digital Content (CDC) Auckland, NZISI and more.
